High School Teams

Iowa City hockey will be implementing a Varsity/JV model for the 2025-2026 season to accommodate our growing player numbers and to allow for a more purposeful approach to each players development. Selections will be made based on the on-ice evaluation and performance through the first part of the season prior to rosters freezing. Both teams will have an equal amount of practice hours per week in a combined and split format, and will have approximately the same number of games. Players in our high school program will be required to perform off-ice training at one of our partner programs 1 time per week to increase athleticism and durability.

Varsity will compete in the Central States Development Hockey League 18U prospects division. This is the replacement for the NIHL, which will be a girls-only league in 2025-2026. The prospects division will have six total tiers with placement pending a series of seeding-round games. It will be similar in effect to the NIHL (geographic spread, game format) with a more precise competitive fit. 3 practices per week. 28 game schedule, plus the potential to play in the playoffs.

JV will compete in the Iowa High School Hockey Alliance (the same league the Jr Heartlanders 18U team has competed in the past three years and won the Championship in 2025). 3 practices per week. 18-20 game regular season with a 3 game finals tournament in February. Additional games will come from Friendlies and Tournaments (Junior Gold, approximately 1-3 tournaments expected)

Age Divisions
December 31st, 2025 is the transition date set for Iowa by USA Hockey. Examples: 6u for 2025-26 season will have players who were born 2019 and younger. 8u will have players who were born 2017 and 2018.
